Last week (18th November), the STEM Hub, delivered by RTC North, organised a regional CyberFirst Conference at The Catalyst, Newcastle. The event welcomed 107 educators, teachers and industry professionals for a day of expert keynotes, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities.
This in-person event was a huge success in bringing together professionals in the North East to discuss all things cybersecurity.
Conference highlights include:
Expert Keynote Speakers and Industry Insights
The event featured an inspiring lineup of speakers who captivated the audience with their expertise and insights. Dr. Meera Sarma, CEO at Cystel, delivered an engaging talk on building a strong sense of community and enriching our collective vision for the future through collaboration.
Tom Jonson, Senior in Cyber Architecture specialising in the human firewall at Gateshead College, followed with a thought-provoking presentation titled "I Am Tom and This Is Me," which explored the essence of what defines a hacker. His discussion challenged the audience to reflect on the widespread lack of IT knowledge and inspired them to consider how they can become better informed to support and safeguard future generations.
Engaging Workshops
Phil O'Neil and Tom Johnson from Gateshead College ran a workshop for teachers encouraging them to take part in skills bootcamps to improve their own knowledge in Cyber. Sage did a mini Cyber CTF and Emoji Quiz and Sunderland University ran an intense coding session, delivered by Ronalda Mo, Lecturer in Computer Science. CyberFirst held an immersive Enigma experience with Nik Kelsey, Ben McIvor and Sarah Zaman and Waterstons ran an interactive cyber game session delivered by Stew Hogg.
Networking Opportunities
With an attendance of over 40 North East companies, the event provided abundant networking opportunities, enabling attendees to connect and deepen their understanding of the dynamic world of cybersecurity. These interactions were enriched by exhibitor stalls where delegates could explore the innovative work of companies operating within the cybersecurity sector. This space included exhibits from: Newcastle University, Sunderland University, Cleveland Police, NECCU, Gateshead College, Infoblox, The Adaptavist Group, Aspire, Accenture, Watersons and Cyberwhite.
The event was a huge success in raising awareness in Cyber and facilitated connections between all those involved.
