Did you know, apprenticeships contribute around £34 billion to the UK economy annually? As National Apprenticeship Week unfolds, we wanted to take the opportunity to talk about apprenticeships and more importantly, the common myths that surround them that may be holding back both individuals and employers…
Apprenticeships are Just for Manual Labour or Low-Skilled Jobs
One of the most persistent myths surrounding apprenticeships is the belief that they are only suitable for those looking for manual work or low-skilled jobs. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Apprenticeships span a wide range of industries and professions, including technology, finance, healthcare, engineering, and more. From cybersecurity specialists to digital marketing professionals, apprenticeships offer so many diverse opportunities, there really is something for everybody.
Apprenticeships Are Inferior to Traditional Education
Another misconception is that apprenticeships are inferior to traditional academic routes (e.g. university). However, many employers prefer an apprenticeship qualification, and here’s why; apprenticeships provide a unique blend of hands-on experience and classroom learning, offering practical skills that are highly valued by employers before they are even qualified.
According to recent 85% of apprentices stay in employment after their programme ends, which just shows the effectiveness and importance of apprenticeship training and 75% of employers report that hiring apprentices has improved the quality of their product or service.
Apprenticeships Are Only for People Who Have Just Left School
Contrary to popular belief, apprenticeships are not exclusive to school leavers! While apprenticeships serve as an excellent transition from education to workforce, they are also accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're a recent graduate seeking practical experience, an experienced professional looking to upskill or change careers, or someone re-entering the workforce after a break, there are apprenticeship opportunities available for everybody.
Apprenticeships Offer Limited Career Progression
This one couldn't be further from the truth. Apprenticeships provide a structured pathway for individuals to develop essential skills, gain industry-recognised qualifications and experience, and progress within their chosen field. Many apprenticeships offer clear progression routes, with opportunities to advance to higher-level apprenticeships, secure promotions, and even start their own businesses.
Apprenticeships play a vital role in shaping the future of work and industry. The North East STEM hub team are incredibly passionate about education, and more specifically, connecting education with industry professionals who can encourage young people to take up STEM Careers.
